Do You Want to be Comfortable or Successful

Do you want to be comfortable or successful? The bad news is that you’re not going to have both. If you stay in your lane and only do the things that you are good at and comfortable with, your business won’t grow and neither will you. The things that make you uncomfortable are some of the very things that will grow you and your business.

If you are happy where you are and aren’t interested in stretching yourself, that’s okay, you are the boss of you. Just don’t be complaining about a lack of sales, poor engagement and growth on IG, or how someone else is getting all the opportunities.

Good things don’t just happen, they are results. Sometimes they can be results from prayer, and belief that they will happen, but you are still involved here. A favorite quote of mine is “People want your position until they find out what it takes to get there.”

Since starting a business at the end of 2021, I have been uncomfortable too many times to list, but here are a few examples:

  • Created an IG account and started posting on a regular basis

  • Made numerous inquiries to stores, cafes, interior designers, etc. about placing my art

  • Participated in my first outdoor art festival, this one is a story all by itself that I’ll share later. Let’s just say UNCOMFORTABLE!!!

  • Attended a week long, out of state workshop (this means painting in front of and sharing with 20+ people you don’t know)

  • Created a website and “put it out there for literally everyone to see”

  • Attended an opening reception for my first exhibition (thank goodness it was a joint exhibition with Claudine Diamond) who is a bundle of energy

  • Learned to call myself an artist and not choke on the words. This is still sometimes a work in progress.

I share all this NOT to toot my own horn and say look at what I’ve done, but to let you know that you can accomplish whatever you want if you just get out of your own way.

It’s kinda like jumping off a cliff into a body of water. It might seem like fun until you’re on the edge looking down. Then you really just want to climb down, but is that why you’re there in the first place?

Thinking about jumping is always worse than the jump. After the jump you will feel exhilarated and proud of yourself for your decision to do it.

Like Nike says “Just Do It”, you won’t be sorry.
