One of my early paintings “Impressionist Poppies”

Second painting of my journey - “Mike the Tiger”

I bet that caught your attention. That’s what you have at your fingertips with today’s technology. Being a self-taught artist I am so grateful for the thousands of individuals who share their knowledge on platforms like YouTube. There is a never ending supply of free, quality content to assist you in your growth as an artist whether you are experienced or just beginning. Here are a few that I really like:

PAINTING WITH JANE - YouTube

Awesome! Jane is a joy to watch and is especially helpful for beginners. She provides a list of all tools/paint needed and does an excellent job explaining each step to create the painting. I have completed several of her lessons. I believe my favorite is the “Impressionist Poppies” and the most fun was “Blue Christmas”. I invited several friends over for a “Painting and Pinot” holiday party and everyone painted one of their own. I prepped each canvas ahead of time by completing the first step, painting the canvas black. Helpful hint, purchase black canvases.

SURAJ FINE ARTS - YouTube

Wow! I don’t think you can watch him paint without getting inspired. He did a collection that was a post a day for a year of beginner level abstract/impressionist palette knife paintings. Since the knife is one of my favorite tools, and his paintings are gorgeous, I was immediately a fan. Just remember that your goal should be to learn new techniques and create your own art, not try to duplicate his (otherwise you will most likely end up frustrated instead of joyful).

BOB ROSS - YouTube

Speaks for itself! Watching and listening to Bob Ross paint is mesmerizing, relaxing and inspirational. He makes you feel like you can accomplish anything.

IDK (Wasn’t Able To Locate Name) - YouTube

I don’t have a picture of my first painting (that might be a good thing), but I would like to share my second one that I did in 2014. The artist provided detailed steps and shared a file with the sketch of the tiger which made it a doable project for me, especially since drawing is not on my list of strengths. This project was special to me because it gave me some confidence to continue painting, and because my son was graduating from LSU and I wanted the painting to be a special graduation gift.
